Hoops 'N' Health: Celebrating 26 Years of Making Menís Health & Wellness a Priority

Hoops 'N' Health scheduled for June 15

June 3, 2019

For the 26th consecutive year, the Men’s Health League and the Men of Color Task Force are hosting the Hoops ‘N’ Health sports tournament and health fair on Saturday, June 15, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Hoyt Field (Gilmore St. & Western Ave.) in Cambridge.

The popular, free event draws hundreds of men and boys who compete in a basketball tournament and participate in a required health workshop.

Hoops ‘N’ Health was launched in 1994 by Cambridge Hospital’s newly created Men of Color Health Program as a way to encourage black men and boys to seek routine health care services. Now called the Men’s Health League, the program sits at the Cambridge Public Health Department and is a comprehensive men’s wellness initiative that promotes routine screenings, fitness and a healthy diet, and regular visits to a physician.

Hoops ‘N’ Health is the only event of its kind in Cambridge.  “Hoops is more than a basketball tournament and a health fair—it is a way to show that we, as a city, care about and are invested in the black community in Cambridge,” said Claude Jacob, Chief Public Health Officer and director of the Cambridge Public Health Department.

This year’s Hoops ‘N’ Health event will feature the basketball tournament, health screenings, an “Ask a Health Care Provider” table, live entertainment, information about community programs, and a free healthy lunch. Kids can enjoy face painting, gaga ball (a gentler version of dodge ball), hula hooping, and other activities.

The basketball tournament will be held from 10 a.m.–6 p.m., and the health fair and other activities will take place from 12 p.m.–4 p.m.

Rain date is Saturday, June 22.
